This strategy is written for World of Warcraft: The Burning Crusade (TBC 2.4.3), the Karazhan raid for 10 players. Mechanics and numbers match the fight on the Moonwell server.
Not a fight but a game on the Gamesman's Hall board. 10 players control pieces to kill Medivh's king. Nobody attacks the players, and a loss only costs time. Main obstacle: Medivh's cheating.
Starting the game
The Gamesman's Hall Door opens after The Curator. Echo of Medivh does not start the game: it starts when a player takes a king, King Llane or Warchief Blackhand. The whole raid plays for that side; your own faction does not matter. The other pieces are taken the same way, by talking to them.
Controls
Control Piece works from 5 yd and moves the player to the hall entrance. The action bar has Move, Change Facing and two abilities. When your piece dies, Recently In Game prevents you from taking another one for 10 sec.
Moving
Pawn, rook, bishop and king move 8 yd, which is the adjacent square. The knight moves 15 yd, the queen 20 yd. You cannot move onto an occupied square. After a move, the piece cannot move or turn for 12 sec. A piece's abilities share a 5-sec cooldown. Each piece attacks an enemy within 8 yd in front of it on its own, for 1,000 every 3 sec. A piece without a player stays in place but uses its abilities on its own.
What the pieces do
Pawn, Human Footman and Orc Grunt: Heroic Blow and Vicious Strike for 1,000 forward, Shield Block and Weapon Deflection absorb 500. Knight, Human Charger and Orc Wolf: Smash and Bite for 3,000 forward, Stomp and Howl make three pieces in front deal 50% less physical damage. Bishop, Human Cleric and Orc Necrolyte: Healing and Shadow Mend heal for 12,000 every 20 sec, Holy Lance and Shadow Spear hit three in front for 2,000. Rook, Conjured Water Elemental and Summoned Daemon: Geyser and Hellfire for 3,000 around it, Water Shield and Fire Shield −50% damage taken. Queen, Human Conjurer and Orc Warlock: Elemental Blast and Fireball for 4,000 at 20 yd, Rain of Fire and Poison Cloud for 6,000 in an area over 10 sec. King, 150,000 HP: Sweep and Cleave for 4,000 to three within 10 yd, Heroism and Bloodlust +50% damage for neighbors.
How Medivh cheats
Every 80–100 sec, one of three. Hand of Medivh: one of his pieces gets +200% damage for 90 sec. Fury of Medivh: fire under three of your pieces for 1 min, Burning Flames hits all pieces within 5 yd for 10,000 every 5 sec. The third: a full heal of his wounded king.
Game plan
Medivh's pieces move on their own, toward the nearest enemy. Take out his bishops first, then the queen, then the king. Your own king hits hardest of all: keep him out of the fire.
End of the game and the chest
If your king dies, the board resets after 35 sec, and you can start again. If Medivh's king dies, the Gamesman's Hall Exit Door opens, and a Dust Covered Chest appears next to the Echo of Medivh: 2x Badge of Justice and two epic items. 35 sec after that you can play for fun: no chest and no cheating.
Players
Take the queen, bishop, knight and rook first. A pawn without a player attacks on its own.
Common mistakes
- The king stands in the fire: 10,000 every 5 sec.
- A move is spent right before the fire: the piece cannot get out for 12 sec.
- Medivh's king is chipped away slowly: the cheat restores all his health.
